Today, I am at my office where I have no second monitor and I have other network settings. The VM would not start: error : 'Cannot ... bla bla .... for monitor PE'. After trying this twice, a kernel panic arose. So after reboot, I simply ran the beta installer and after that it just worked again. Since I cannot use my regular e-mail in the office, I post the panic log here :

7th time Beta 5540 has crashed in 4 days. Crashed 3 times today. Have sent emails with logs and explanation on each occasion. Suffer the same symptoms with Build 5160.

Seriously effecting my work and starting to lose confidence in Parallels Desktop for Mac. Need fix to stop crashes urgently.

17" MBP 2.4GHz 4GB RAM Nvidia 8600M, Leopard, XP Pro SP2 (latest updates)

    @Xenos:

I booted in Safe mode, suspended the VM and then resumed it. There was no crash.

While in Safe mode I used Add/Remove Programs to remove Parallels Tools, rebooted, and then suspended from this normal mode boot. The VM then resumed correctly with no crash.

I then tried reinstalling the Parallels Tools. This took a lot longer time than I have seen before, seeming to hang at about 85% for quite a while. I rebooted XP after the install completed, and then suspended the VM. When I resumed, XP crashed again in the same way as before. The MS error report was the same Device Driver message - Sound is still removed in my VM config.

So there seems to be a Parallels Tools problem when resuming on my system.

[UPDATE] I tried turning off the experimental DirectX shaders, but it still crashed on resume.

Marc Vos, you've encountered a memory allocation problem. Parallels allocates Virtual Machine's RAM as one integral file. When too many applications are launched on your Mac, there could be not enough space in one sector for the VM file. And it causes this error when you are trying to start your VM. When you keep on trying, you may get kernel panic or grey screen of death.
    So the possible solution is:
    - Reboot your Mac, do not launch any applications except Parallels - try to load Windows then.
    - You will have to decrease amount of virtual RAM for your VM if the problem still occurs.
This can help if you don't need some applications requiring a lot of memory.

kevinvh@mac.com, I've received your pvs file with request ticket, thank you. The engineer investigating your issue will be able to give an answer not sooner than tomorrow, please sorry!

AlanH, could you try to install Tools in custom mode? If you do, at Select features page of the installer please move checks from boxes at features responsible for video or/and sound. One of the Tools features apparently provokes the crashes but we need to make a search to know which one exactly.
And there is another question: is your virtual machine created by Parallels Transporter or by ordinary Parallels installer?

    Best regards,
    Xenos

What's the status on Spaces with Parallels? To what extent is Spaces supported, and what about Spaces doesn't work?

In other words, is it possible to spread Windows programs out over spaces while in Coherence?
Is it possible to run Parallels in full screen mode in one Space and also switch to other Spaces?

Will do. I'll try to do a sequence of elimination tests to see which tool feature(s) are responsible. I guess I have to uninstall the tools after each attempt? I'll get back to you on this.
Transporter. I had an old Parallels XP VM from some time ago, but when I installed Leopard I couldn't get it to run at all. I really didn't want to have to reinstall XP and all its service packs etc, so I converted a Fusion VM using Transporter, and that worked. I have ensured that the VMWare tools were uninstalled.

Thanks Xenos - I am hanging in there. Good news is that I have not crashed today. Don't know why as I am doing all the same things.

Since this has been said before, I always start Parallels after starting my Mac. So how can the memory be fragmented just after a reboot - only Stickies is started and some menubar apps? I have 4Gb of RAM.

I have another issue: 'capture mouse' does not work in full screen mode on a second monitor :

    - The shape of the cursor does not change when I hover over window borders, and when I click a window border, the cursor changes to a 'resize' shape and retains this shape until I click somewhere else.
    - No tool tips when I hover over buttons.
    - Menus do not drop down when I hover over the menu bar.
    - No menu highlighting when I hover over the individual items.

I have to click everything. Very annoying. And in windowed mode, all works normal.

    Hello,

Dogfish Jones, for the moment we generally ask to disable Spaces for proper Parallels work. In the future build providing full Leopard compatibility Spaces will be supported.

Marc Vos, you're right, launching Parallels just after starting your Mac should put Parallels' main drivers in the first 4 GB address space of the system. By the way you can start a virtual machine automatically on Mac OS X startup. However there can be other circumstances provoking the Memory allocation issue. Please check what amount of memory you specify for the guest OS. Try to increase it manually to maximum (Parallels Desktop -> Preferences ->Memory tab). Also check, how much memory is specified for your VMs. Please decrease the amount of memory for the VM you use.

I can't give you a prompt answer on your 'capture mouse' issue. I've delivered the information to our QA team. Hope to get a workaround soon. Thank you for the report.

    Best regards,
    Xenos

    Xenos,

Current, in the Preferences I have 1124 Mb specified and I have set the VM to 1024 Mb. That leaves 100 Mb for Parallels. Is that not enough? What you are suggesting is to give the Parallels app more and the VM less RAM, correct?

Hi Xenox - OSX 10.5.1 released. Do you expect it to have any impact on Parallels Beta 5540.

Any progress on updates yet - thanks.

    Hello,

Marc Vos, could you leave 250 Mb for Parallels by reducing your VM RAM?
Also please go to Parallels Desktop -> Preferences -> Memory and put check in the box at Enable virtual memory preallocation.
    I hope this will help!

kevinvh@mac.com, we do not recommend installing OSX 10.5.1 now, unless you'd like to test it with our QA team :)

    Best regards,
    Xenos

Hi Xenos, I always have this setting on. Yesterday I increased the memory setting and gave it 100 Mb extra - so now it's on 200 Mb. Lets see how it performs. I updated to 10.5.1 and I had one crash - I sent the crash report to you via e-mail (to the report bug address). Since the crash, I have had no more troubles.

    Regards,
    Marc

I hope you'll start your VM now.
Thank you for your crash report, our QA will analyze it (first come first serve). If you'd like us to look at it sooner, could you send a copy attached to the forum post? You'll find the file in Mac HD-Library-Parallels-Bugreports.
And could you give more details on your Capture mouse issue? When exactly do you get it?

    Best regards,
    Xenos

No need, I'll wait for the next update. It runs fine now, thanks!

Ehmm, what can I say more...? I work with an external monitor attached to my MacBook Pro and run Parallels there - so I have two 'separate' environments. Now, when I run the VM full screen (View->Full Screen or the button on the toolbar), Parallels neatly switches to full screen on the second monitor but doesn't catch the mouse automatically anymore. I have to click in Windows first to activate it, before I can click, say, a menu. Normally when you click a menu once, it pops down and you can hover the menu items. While you hover, the items get highlited and submenus pop out. But in full screen mode, this does not work anymore. I have to click on a submenu-item to have the submenu shown. And so for every submenu deeper. The same goes for window borders. In Windows, when you hover over a window border, the mouse changes its shape to these 'double-arrow' mouse pointers. This does not happen when in full screen mode. You have to actually click a border and only then the cursor changes its shape. And the funny thing is, it retains that 'double-arrow' pointer until you click somewhere else. Also, when you are typing in a text editor, the mouse has an i-beam shape. When you move the mouse out of the edit-area, it should become a pointer. But in full screen mode, it remains a i-beam until you actually click on something else.

Well, that's it, basically. In View->Single Window and View->Coherence the 'follow-mouse' feature works normal.

Xenos - looks like you have a beta tester for 10.5.1. I updated automatically through the Apple update process. Have run Parallels since the update and nothing untoward so far.

    Crash report

Did you receive it? I got a bounce from your mail server, telling me that 'report-3-mac' is an unkown user. Still this the e-mail address listed in Parallels Desktop when you want to report a problem. To be on the safe side, I attached the crash reprt to this post.

    Thanks,
    Marc
