    I have just installed PWS 2.2 in my Vista based PC so I can use XP for many reasons. The guest XP won't allow me
    to access the internet or read the dvd-cd-rom--although the host works just fine for both--any solutions?
    I'm new to virtual machine talk so go easy on me please.

    You need to check what is network configuration for Network, Shared or Host -Only
    perform ipconfig /all in guest and host and put here

    Should I perform a ipconfig for each configuration in network adapter?

    If it is running , perform ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew in Vista and check is it got address different from 169.254.x.x
    if yes perform the same in XP

    Ok, let us see as far as I can understand,
    As far as I can understand youhave this one adapter connected to Internet,
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : had1.or.comcast.net.
    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::18df:36f1:995d:7fb1%8
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 24.21.59.150
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.240.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 24.21.48.1

    But in order to connect to internet you need to assign IP in the same range also for Virtual Adapter in Windows XP, i mean in the range of above mentioned adapter, alternatively if you can put it on router and assign some internal IP you need only to specify for Vista and Windows XP the IP in the same rabge and the same gateway

    Are you saying that these values must be the same in the guest computer? And how do I go about getting them there?

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : had1.or.comcast.net.
    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::18df:36f1:995d:7fb1%8
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 24.21.59.150

    I suppose you need some kind of router with switch capabilities,
    Assign external Ip to external router interface and 192.168.0.1 to internal,
    To VM and Host
    .0.2 and 0.3 and gateway 192.168.0.1
    and it will work
