I have the Windows 10 insider edition, which requires more frequent updates. That hasn't been a problem so far. Since updating Parallels to v16 (I am currently on 16.0.1 48919), Windows has not been able to apply the updates. When it does the Restart to apply the updates, it gets as far as the Windows logo, possibly with some spinning white dots, and then the VM halts, the dots are frozen and there is no cursor. I have to choose Actions/Reset, to get Windows 10 to complete the startup. I can restart at any time, and it works fine, it's only if I choose the install updates and restart option than it gets stuck. There is a new v16 feature, where the VM is paused if there is no activity. I wondered if that was what is happening, so I tried to disable that option. It didn't solve the problem. Has anyone else seen this behavior, and found a solution.
There is no check for updates option, the updates are already downloaded, and I only have a Status: Pending Restart message.
Here is how the check for updates control panel looks, even after restarts, getting stuck at the Windows logo, and reset actions.
Thanks for that suggestion, but there are a couple of reasons why it isn't my situation. I think that those users were on the latest update and were still getting a you have to restart to update message. At this point I am 66 builds out of date, I really do have updates to apply. Also, my issue isn't that I'm getting a restart to update message, it's that when restarting the VM locks up at the Windows logo stage. I made a screen recording. I spliced out all of the parts where nothing much happened. The moment at 27 seconds into the video, where you see the Windows and two white dots, lasted 7 hours (before I gave up an did a Reset): Is there a way to force the VM to continue instead of doing a Reset? If I could do that I expect the updates would get applied.
Some news. I'm not sure which of these things solved the problem, but I had reason to install another language pack in Windows 10, that took a very long time, also, I have the recent 16.1.0 (48950) Parallels update. Either way, I now seem to be getting Windows updates without Windows locking up during a restart.
