I have been running an old WXP instance with Office XP under it for years. I downloaded parallels 13 and tested this VM under it and it worked perfectly. Then I bought a license key for parallels 13 (Brand new key, not a upgrade). Then I went back to the vm to try to use Office XP again and it is broken! It launches the activation assistant and wants me to reinstall, etc. Otherwise all files are read only! I don't understand how an activation key (versus demo mode) causes such huge problems. I have done number upgrades and never had this problem.
