Packet Capture on Virtual NIC (host-only network)

I've tried using both tcpdump and Wireshark on my Macbook Pro to sniff the vnic between the Mac (host) and a Linux VM running on a host-only network. I'm only seeing the broadcast packets on this interface, but none of the unicast IP packets between the host and the VM. tcpdump is not available on the Linux VM (it's a custom install for an embedded platform).

Desktop 6 for Mac (build 6.0.11994)

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated

I would like to be able to somehow tcpdump on the virtual network. I cannot do it.
