The hardware that is virtualized by Parallels doesn't itself support virtualization. However, MS has either/is going to release a patch that will allow XP mode to be installed on any system, not just those with the hardware support. Once this happens, you should be able to run XP mode fine.

Yes, that patch has been released, and now it is indeed possible to run XP Mode in a Parallels Desktop Win7 VM (and, of course, also in a VMware Fusion Win7 VM, or in a Sun VirtualBox Win7 VM)

    Here is the download link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

(the patch is the third file to be installed).

You would be better of installing XP as a guest in Parallels. "XP mode" likely to be a lot slower than a Parallels guest.

Plus I bet Parallels runs XP faster even if the host OS is windows 7

Yes, of course it's faster with a "real" WinXP VM: but, nevertheless, XP Mode is a free download with Win7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate - so, why not run it also inside a VM...? :)

It takes a long time to start XP Mode inside a VM; but once started (and subsequently suspended/resumed), it's definitely usable (at least with enough RAM for Win7).

Still Can't install Windows XP Mode even with patch

I've installed all 3 files from Microsoft (in order) and still get Event ID 42 "Virtual PC is incompatible with the host processor in this machine. Virtual PC requires at least a Pentium II (or equivalent) processor." I'm running Parallels 5 latest version on an iMac with Core2 duo 3.06 processor (both cores enabled in the virtual machine). Anyone have any ideas why XP mode won't work and I continue to get this error?

To say the truth, I had tried it in VMware Fusion, where XP Mode (with the latest MS patch) works OK: so, I assumed that it would work "out of the box" also in Parallels Desktop.

Yes, it would indeed be interesting to know why it doesn't (yet) work in Parallels Desktop...

Maybe it could work by editing some configuration file?

I have a similar issue... I can got the program to install. Though, having compatible hardware and installing the three files, I still get an error when trying to run the program, "the host process has failed to start".

Anybody get the emulator to work yet???
