    Hi,

I have Parallels 8 running. I understand that I cannot upgrade to Parallels 11.
I rather have to do a new installation of Parallels 11. If I do that, is then everything that I currently have in Parallels 8 (windows version, all windows programs that I installed there,...) lost?

    Thanks!

Hi, please close an existing Parallels Desktop and follow this article to install and upgrade to Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac. By following the article, you will not loose your virtual machine and it's data.

Sorry, but this is a bit confusing for me...

In the article it says that upgrades are only possible for Parallels 9 and later. I have Parallels 8, so, upgrade will not be possible for me!

And then it says: "4. If you are upgrading to Parallels Desktop 11 from a previous version, you will see this dialog. Click Replace to remove your current version of Parallels Desktop and install Parallels Desktop 11." Since upgrading is not possible for me, this is not applicable for me.

Can you confirm that I will not loose my current virtual machine (Windows version, windows programs,...) in Parallels 8 when I do a new installation of Parallels 11?

Thanks... I just want to make sure I don't run into trouble...

Hi Kilian, Customers who are using Parallels Desktop 8 or the earlier versions are not eligible for upgrade pricing for Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac. If you would like to take advantage of all Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac features, you will need to purchase a full copy of Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac and then follow the steps suggested in the article.

Thanks for the advertisement! Unfortunately this does not answer my question at all...
    Please reread my earlier post...
I would appreciate an answer to this question:
"Can you confirm that I will not loose my current virtual machine (Windows version, windows programs,...) in Parallels 8 when I do a new installation of Parallels 11?"

    Thanks!

The upgrade limitation from Parallels Desktop 9 or 10 is as per our licensing policy. You can use a virtual machine from any previous version of Parallels Desktop on Parallels Desktop 11 (and even from some other virtualization software too).

Before you do anything, go into Finder and look for the file(s) Documents/Parallels/[name of Guest OS].pvm . Mine is over 40GB in size. That is your virtual hard drive, which you want to keep safe. Back this up to a spare external drive. You should be able to retrieve this later after you upgrade, should anything go amiss. I was told that this file remains intact during the upgrade process, keeping all your guest OS settings, but you cannot be too sure, so take this backup.

I believe that some 7/8 Parallels customers were given a special offer (informed by email a couple of months ago) whereby a special 7/8 Upgrade licence was issued. I don't think this was made available to the general public. I did respond to the special offer, but am currently running Snow Leopard, which doesn't support Parallels 11, and am very reluctant yet to upgrade my host OS to El Capitan for as long as I keep hearing reports that Snow Leopard is the superior OS. Therefore there is no point yet in upgrading Parallels from 8.
