I used Parallels Desktop 19 on my Mac M1 to run Windows 11 and work with Windows applications. After the automatic update to version 20, I encountered an issue: I can no longer open files from Windows 11 in macOS applications. Previously, I was able to open text files in Sublime Text 4 (on Mac), but now "Sublime Text (Mac)" appears only as a shortcut in Windows (prlsha:[0-9a-e]{32}). This has significantly degraded my experience with your product. I am very frustrated that you've broken the core functionality that I relied on when using Parallels!

Ditto. After making the update after Parallels installation prompt, Windows 10 would not launch on Mac. Productivity lost, very aggravating.

Mac OS Sierra VM is starting only with Hypervisor set to Apple. Windows 10 and Windows XP starting OK, but no one VM can acces te Shared Folders, so Paralels Desktop 20.0 is momentally unusable. Parallels Desktop reset to 19.4 using Time Machine copy (Thanks Apple for it) and everythinhg is OK again.

I just updated to Parallels 20. I have a script that I run in my Windows VM that launches a Mac app passing it a command line argument. I would do this in my script simply by running the exe file for the Mac app in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Parallels and passing my command line argument.

After updating to Parallels 20, all of the macOS app exe files are no longer in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Parallels. I tried turning off "Share Mac applications with Windows" and turning it back on again already :)

I see the .lnk files for the Mac apps to be run from the start menu in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Parallels Shared Applications. But using the .lnk shortcut seems to discard the command line argument.

Were the exe files for the macOS apps moved somewhere? If they're just removed in the update now in favor of the .lnk shortcuts, how would we run a macOS app from Windows and pass a command line argument?

Like ParallelsU1345 and KellyW5, I am having an issue since updating to Parallels 20 re opening files in Mac apps from Windows.

I've set Preview (MacOS) as the default PDF viewer, which does work for opening PDF files from File Explorer. However, PDF attachments in Microsoft Outlook (Windows) no longer open at all, and show a blank icon rather than the Preview icon. Similarly, attachments will not open when Adobe Reader (MacOS) is the default PDF reader. They will open if Adobe Reader (Windows) is the default.

Is there a way to fix this so I can open Outlook PDF attachments in MacOS apps again?

Yes. But the full screen display that was broken several updates ago still hasn't been fixed. (Unless you know a way to get rid of that offing MacOS menu bar?)

Here's the answer I got on the Parallels Desktop for Developers discord yesterday:
"Unfortunately, in PD20, we no longer support that scenario, and we do not provide the .exe applications for it. I have suggested this to our dev team, and they will see if they can find a workaround.
Would it be possible to ask what kind of apps and parameters are you using? the more info we have the clear the scenario would be"

so I'll continue the discussion there.

Shared folder functionality degradation: no more hardlinks support!

Parallels Pro for Mac 20.0.1 (55659)
VM Ubuntu 24.04.1 with the latest parallels tools installed.

I'm using a shared folder from macos inside ubuntu VM and getting error about hardlinks not being supported by FUSE mount:

    Code:
ln: failed to create hard link 'test-h' => 'test': Function not implemented
    Code:
    Projects on /media/psf/Projects type fuse.prl_fsd (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other)
It used to work with Parallels 19.x, I suppose it was based on a different sharing mechanism. Please, consider adding support for hardlinks to the new FUSE-based implementation of prl_fsd, it's a basic functionality in UNIX systems and is a show stopper for many use cases. Otherwise we have to fall back to a custom NFS-based sharing which is slower and requires manual configuration on the host which also kills the point of using Parallels in the first place as a user friendly single-click solution. Thanks!

Changing the hypervisor to Apple per https://kb.parallels.com/125186 enabled macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) to launch, but other issues remain: because this is an older version of macOS that is no longer receiving security updates, I run it with Network disconnected and use "Shared Folders" to access iCloud and other local storage. In V20, trying to access "Shared Folders" with this configuration generates an error. My guess is that Parallels changed v20 so that folder sharing now requires a network connection. If so, then Parallels really isn't useful to me any longer.
My use case: running an older perpetual license version of Adobe Creative Suite and Acrobat XI. Since Adobe "retired" the activation servers, this older software will revert to "trial mode" when it has a network connection, rendering it useless after about 30 days. My license is 100% legal and I my use doesn't justify the ongoing cost of a Creative Cloud subscription. A subscription to Parallels Desktop Pro is more cost-effective. I'm sure there are many others who use Parallels for access to older software, so it's disappointing to find this incompatibility.
I will be reverting to v19. Hopefully, Parallels restores the Shared Folders functionality to v20...otherwise, I have no reason to continue my subscription.

New 20 killed my Win-10 and will not see it has a HDD. The fixes in the Hardware Configuration listed in this thread did not work.
Intel Mac, looks like I will have to roll back to 19

With this new version setting a default app in Windows 11 to Chrome or Firefox for Mac , breaks Outlook for Windows hyperlinks

Outlook for Windows will open hyperlinks if the default web browser is set to any Windows browser , but if set to any browser from the Mac it will throw a generic error that the link can't be opened.
