Having an issue printing to my airport printer thru parallels 4. I get an error message from my Mac printer stating that "the process "pstopdffilter" stopped unexpectedly with a status 1"

I have tried to reinstall the Bonjour Generic printer but to no avail.

Anybody seen anything like this before?

    Thanks.

pstopdffilter/pstocupsraster failed with err number -31000

I am getting a similar error. I can print to network printers but not a local one attached by USB. Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Jay

Me too, I believe the problem started when I upgraded to Parallels 4 and at that time I was using Mac OS 5X and a USB HP printer. Since then, I have upgraded to Snow Leopard and a wireless Canon printer.

When I first attempt to print a page, the error message reads: "Error: pstopdffilter/pstocapsraster failed with err number -31000". I then delete the page sent to the printer and try to print again, and often it works.

Very annoying. I have rebooted Parallels, rebooted Windoze XP, rebooted my Mac. Same results. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

What is an "err number -31000"?

    solution part 1

    - on windows xp you can find the system printer hp 8500ps.
    - choose this printer in windows if you want to print.
    - all prints you make in windows via parallels will be send to your mac printer (provided if your brother 6490cw works on mac).

BUT: I ONLY CAN PRINT DIN A4! how can i print din a3? what settings on the system-printer hp 8500 i have to choose?

I just installed Windows 7 in Parallels 5.0. When I try to print to my Canon i850 printer, I'm getting the same error message as others have posted in this thread, pstopdffilter failed with error number -31000. I did install the latest printer driver for the i850 from the Canon site. It's supposed to work with Windows 7. Everything seems to be set up correctly. Since my Canon i850 application on my iMac, which reported this error, also said it was a Parallels Print Job, I'm assuming that it is Parallels 5.0 which is at fault, not Windows 7. Maybe I'm wrong, but I hope someone will post a solution soon.

ever since the "service pack" for p5 I have had the same problem and have tried everything suggested but to no avail. the error msgs in the console are all "prl_" related. The lesson i have learned is to always wait atleast 2 weeks after an update to see if it is worth the trouble...

With the update to Parallels 5.0, I still have the same problem of being unable to print to my Canon i850 printer, even though it is directly connected to my iMac.

Why hasn't someone from the Parallels spoken on this issue? We can't RELIABLY print from Parallels to a Mac based printer (specifically HP in my case)...

This is making me seriously regret upgrading to 4.0...

Also, it seems that for me, the 2nd time I click to print a document, it sometimes works perfectly fine when printing to the HP 8500PS (instead of to the actual printer's name of C4780), but ONLY when clicking print the second time...and to boot, it doesn't always work..

Walt-o-matic, printing in parallels has given me the best advice and it works for me. If you google pstopdffilter/pstocupraster err no 31000 you should be able to find it.

from Alan S. re pstopdffilter process problems

I just installed Parallels 5 and Windows 7 on my MAC and am having the same problem as others on your Forum. I find it hard to believe that some of these posts go back to March of '09 with no solution.

I need to be able to print to my HP printer. Either that or return Parallels and get Fusion.

    Thank you.

    I'm having the same error

while trying to print from Windows XP on Parallels to a network printer... The printer setup on Windows seems no problem through port LPT1.

Can the Parallels team do something?

    Found solution

I had been trying to print from Parallels desktop (Windows 7) for the last week. My printer worked fine with all my Imac programs but not with my windows programs. FINALLY found a solution.
I went to Parallels Desktop - Help - Printing From Windows.
It gave me step by step instructions. Really very simple.
    The main thing is that with a "Virtual Machine" you are also using a "Virtual Printer". You don't load the driver for your particular printer, you load a generic HP or Apple driver;
Here is the main part of the instructions
Launch Parallels Desktop and select a virtual machine.
Open the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog by choosing Configure from the Virtual Machine menu. Go to the Hardware tab and make sure the configuration includes a printer port. If necessary, add it. See Adding and Removing Devices.
In the Printer Port pane, select Connected if you want the printer to be automatically connected on the virtual machine startup. Click the Source field and select the appropriate printer from the list. You can use the Default printer option if you want to use the default printer set in the primary OS.
Click OK to close the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog.
    Start the virtual machine.
In a Windows guest OS, if you have Parallels Tools installed, the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS or Apple Color LW 12/660 PS printer is automatically connected to the virtual machine. You can use it at once. In a Linux guest OS, or if you do not have Parallels Tools installed in your Windows guest OS, no matter what type of printer you have, install either the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS or Apple Color LW 12/660 PS printer driver..
Be sure to add the same driver in windows also.
