I set up a virtual machine running Windows XP on my MacBook several years ago and was able to run a network analysis software I need (UCINET) fine. I'm using an older version of Parallels (3188 build), but it was fine for the few programs I needed, which have not changed.

I hadn't used it for about a year, though, and I've run into a problem where all my folders are set to "Read Only" by default and no matter how many times I try to switch this permission, it defaults back to "Read Only." The files can be set to read/write fine--the problem being that I can't write any output files, which is necessary for UCINET. This applies to all my existing folders (both on the virtual machine and my Mac) as well as new ones that I've created trying to set up a workaround. My Shared folders are set as read/write in the configuration, but don't show up that way in Windows Explorer.

Apparently this is a known issue in Windows, but I tried the procedure here today with no luck.

I've tried reading old threads here, where this seemed to come up quite a bit, but all the threads seem to die without any resolution, and vague promises from Parallels staff that they're "working on it."

Any help would be much appreciated.

I went ahead and upgraded to Parallels 6 since I found I could stick with XP, but after updating the virtual machine I still have the same problem.
