Okay, I am not sure how to fix this problem, but on my Mac side of things, I have Stuffit as my unarchiver of choice for .rar files... I had Winrar installed on my Parallels XP machine as well as my Parallels Vista machine... And after installing Winrar on both of those that is the default app when I download a .rar file through my Mac, It auto opens Parallels and then Winrar.

Is there a way to not have Winrar be the default? It gets annoying, especially when it is a small .rared file that has to take extra long times to open Parallels. Or when I have XP VM open, it will then default to the Vista Winrar copy.

I use a download manager and ftp clients that download the .rar files for my business, and I can't specify in them, like the built in save or open manager when downloading with Firefox or Safari.

Any ideas? Or is this something I am stuck with happening forever, or until I uninstall Winrar(which I can't do, because it is easier to have that when I have to Remote connect to another computer and download something, instead of dragging it to the Mac side, unraring it then dragging it back).

Anyways, if anyone can offer up an easy solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

Start Virtual Machine, and go to Applications -Edit - find Rar files and select applications you want to use

Okay, maybe I explained this wrong. I want my expansion of .rar files on my Mac to have NOTHING to do with Parallels or Windows... When I download something, when the virtual machine is closed, and it is a .rar file, it automatically opens Winrar through Paralells. I want that to not happen. Having Winrar installed on Parallels Windows, it makes that the defaul application. When Parallels is closed, even when it is open, I want what is installed on my Mac OS to open them. I know how to choose apps through Parallels, but I want my Mac OS Stuffit App to be the defaul when I download on my Mac OS>

Yes, this is exactly what I suggested select
Applications- Edit -Rar files - and select either Mac OS application or Windows Application

Okay, then maybe something is screwy with my computer then, cuz when I do that. Rar files isn't one of the options. WinRar is... When I hit that... I have the SmartSelect, and every type of .rar extension, the Mac Application is selected.
Yet, in OS X when I download something of the .rar type, it opens with Winrar.

For Mac Applications, it has the Finder option or Arhcive Utility.

Another step you can try is to delete WinRar from Windows Applications folder from Virtual Machine folder on Mac side

Yeah, I thimk that is my only option, but I wanted to steer clear of that, cuz I have to archive and extract things on the windows side for work, and it would just be a pain to drag back and forth from Mac and Windows.

Oh well, thanks for your help.

    Here it is test case:
I cannot reproduce situation, changing something in WinRar from Applications/Edit correctly sets everything

I deleted not WinRar from Windows, but
    winrar from Documents/Parallels/<VM name>/Windows Applications
Doing that will remove default Application from Mac OS side, but in Windows WinRar is still there

Okay, well, I am dowloading a .rar file using iGetter, and it shows it as what Stuffit shows .rar files not the WinRar logo, so as of now, we are on the right track. I'll let you know when it is finished downloading.
    I appreciate that help John.

*UPDATE* It worked, you are a genious. Downloaded and defaulted from Stuffit, let's just
hope it is still installed fine on the Windows side, but if you said it was, then all should be
well. Thank you so much. !!!!!
