I'm using Parallels 3.0 build 5608, love it. But I've run into a problem registering a new program ... it works fine when registering it on a normal standalone PC. So it's got to be a problem with Parallels I think. Here's the scoop: I downloaded a Windows-only utility into my VM (XP SP2) and installed it. It was a limited trial, it worked fine, so I purchased it ($50!) and waited for the email with my serial number. What the developer sent was a strange little "key" file that they told me to double-click, and then click OK when the alert said the registry had been updated. So I did that, and the alert did say "okay to add the following [gibberish] to the [gibberish] registry?" I clicked Yes, and it said it was successfully added, so I clicked OK to dismiss the alert. At that point, per the developer, I could boot the program and look in the About box where it would show my name and that it was registered to me. But it didn't ... it showed "Unregistered -- 14 days remaining." I tried a few times, rebooting Windows, etc. to no avail. Emails to the support address at the company didn't help; they said they tested my key file over there and it worked (and included a screen shot showing my name in the About box), and suggested I try it on another machine. So I hauled out my old Compaq laptop running the same Windows XP SP2. I downloaded and installed the trial, copied over the key file, ran the key (got the same alerts that it was successful), and when I booted the program, it DID show that I was the registered user. So ... I really don't know how to troubleshoot this. It is a major pain to have to keep this Compaq around to run the utility; not having to do so was kinda the point about installing Parallels. Any help? I have no experience working with the registry. Thanks AM
Hard to guess, what is causing such situation, the best solution to narrow down problem is to create new Virtual machine and install the same software, and check
what is the utility you are trying to install? That could offer some insight as to what the issue might be!
amarie, mydanes had suggested a good idea. Please post us info about the utility and we will try to contact the person who wrote it and resolve the issue
