On start up of Windows XP, I get a message "\windows\inf\biosinf.inf file is missing or corrupted".
The Knowlege Base has a procedure for repairing Windows XP. It doesn't work. It is saying after step 11 that "Windows should scan your VM for the existing Windows Installation- wait until it finishes and choose to repair existing installation". This doesn't happen. Instead it shows the partition with some choices and warns you that it will wipe out all your files and data.

Is there something missing in the instructions? Is there any way to repair this other than reloading Windows XP?

Is the install missing substantial parts perhaps? Check Parallels explorer. That method should work.

I'm not sure. I finally went beyond that step and it finished installing (repairing?) Windows, and the best part, my programs and data files were still there.

It sounds like you did a repair install. Glad things are working.
