I have an XP image that I can't get working. I have even tried to boot off the XP CD and it will not recognize that there was an installation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay
Hello Jay, How did you create the image? Please try the following to make an ISO image of the installation CD with Windows: 1. In the Finder, browse to Macintosh HD - Applications - Utilities. Choose Disk Utility. 2. Insert the source CD-ROM, the image of which you want to create, into the CD/DVD-ROM drive of Macintosh computer. 3. Select the CD/DVD-ROM drive from the Disk Utility device list. 4. Click the New Image button on the top of the Disk Utility window. 5. Specify the name and location for the image or leave the default settings. 6. Set Image Format to read-only. 7. Click Save and wait till the image creation process is complete. Now you can connect this image to the virtual machine’s CD/DVD-ROM drive: 1. Launch Parallels Desktop. 2. Click the CD/DVD-ROM icon in the main Configuration window to open the CD/DVD-ROM drive’s settings. 3. Select the Use image file option and click Browse to locate the ISO image file. You can use a successfully created image file as a bootable media for the guest OS installation instead of a real CD. If during the image creation I/O errors occurred, this may indicate that there is either a problem with your disc, or your Macintosh CD/DVD-ROM drive doesn’t function properly. Best regards, Xenos
It was a working XP image but the Hard Drive I had failed. I was able to pull the files I needed off of it including the parallels folder etc. My image is about 7 GB but it will not boot into windows. I have configured it to boot off of the CD ROM first and went through the Windows installation to the point where it will ask to repair an install or format and the only option I have is to format the partition and install XP. So though the image is there and has some size to it, I can't seem to repair it to pull files off of it. Any thoughts with the new information?
Jay, could you let me know your virtual hard disk size? In your VM folder right click the .hdd file and choose "Get info" to find it out. Did you possibly click the "Recreate" button in your VM Configuration Editor, Hard Disk section, Advanced tab? Best regards, Xenos
7.2 GB. I have run a chkdsk /r and after it found errors a couple of times and corrected them, I can extract data from the image. It still will not boot and is not recognized when Im trying to repair it so I might end up having to rebuild it from scratch.
Hello Jay, Now after you have run checkdisk successfully, please repair Windows installation. Best regards, Xenos
I repaired it three times and the last time it found no errors, however when I tried to repair the Windows installation it was not recognized until windows needed to be installed and all it did was ask to make a new windows system folder (no option to repair as it was not recognized as a valid installation or on the list of choices to be repaired). If I kept it the same default dir for windows to be installed, it would delete all of my data. After all that, I tried to do a bootcfg /scan to see if I could find and add it to the windows installations found during the install process. After that, a fixmbr did not yield any results either. I found that I could mount the drive and pull my data off of it. I built a new image on Thursday (27th) and migrated my data to it as I was not getting very far with my old image.
