The installation on my home/desktop PC found the network easily enough, as the desktop only has hardline connections. After performing the on-line update that Ubuntu likes, it immediately shackled the video to 640x480, with no other selections. Now I'm considering performing a re-install, copying the etc/x11/xorg.config (or something like that) to a backup, then restoring it after Ubuntu does its big update online. At least that way I'll get to keep my video modes, no? But why would that occur, I wonder? The machine at home is beyond 1800 x 1280, so what gives? Problem: After performing update, Ubuntu 7.10 locks the video mode to 640x480 - with no other option. (Suggested) Solution: Perform clean install of OS (yeah, I know - what a drag) but make a backup copy of your etc/x11/xorg.config file before allowing the system to perform on-line update. Then copy/replace those video lines dealing with you video resolution from the old xorg.config.backup into your new xorg.config file. Voila! You have your video modes back.
