Run Antivirus in Boot Camp or in virtual system?

I am using Parallels 5540, Leopard 10.5.1 and Norton Antivirus for Windows. I have one shared folder in the virtual system which has the desktop files from the Mac therein. I run a full system scan once per week and have, until now, been doing so in Boot Camp rather than in the virtual system.

My question is:

Is it necessary to switch over to Boot Camp to run the full system scan or does a scan in the virtual system suffice?
