I'm trying to get a couple old games from the Windows 95 era working on OS X 10.5. One of them, Logical Journey of the Zoombinis, came out about 13 years ago for both Mac and PC. The Mac version, which runs in the "Classic" environment, is now deprecated and won't work on Intel Macs running 10.5, so I'm trying to get it to work through a Parallels install of Windows.

I've gotten it to run in a Parallels install of Windows 98, but it crashes about a quarter of the time at a specific point in the game. I tested it on a PC running XP and got a very stable result, so I went about trying to get it to work in XP in Parallels. However, the game wants to run in 256 color mode and gives me an "unable to initialize graphics" error if its compatibility is set incorrectly. However, even with the compatibility set correctly, Zoombinis will only run on XP in Paralles if XP is full screen. On Windows 98, however, it will run either windowed or full screen.

My theory is that because XP is so well integrated into Parallels, and you can go between OS X and Windows without having to click in and out of the window like you do in other Guest OSes, that there's some sharing of video going on that doesn't allow a program to run in 256 color mode. But when you go full screen, that integration with OS X disappears, and you can run 256 colors without a problem. What I'd like to do is force XP to operate the same way 98 does: no smooth integration, and no video sharing or whatever's going on. I've checked under Coherence, where I thought something like this would exist, and haven't been able to find anything. Is this possible? I'd love to the freedom to run the game in a window as well as full screen.
