I am converting (VERY SLOWLY) from Win 2000 Pro to Win XP Pro. After much effort I decided that a "quick" update is a disaster and I reverted to a new install. This loses pretty much everything and you need to rebuild. One of the things I lost was sharing a folder between the iMac and Windows. I had this and used it in Win 2000. A little background: - Have Parallels for Mac 3.0 Build 5608 - I will NOT upgrade until I get 2000 to XP if I can help it, then only if I go to Mac OS X 10.6 to gain the performance from it. - My 2,8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac is running OS X 10.5.8 - In Parallels, the shared folder shows up for the VM under Devices -> Shared Folders. - I have installed a very old but new XP Pro purchased on E-Bay along with Service Packs 1a and 3. - While in the XP VM, I can't even find the Mac on my local area network (heck, it's on the same machine!). - In Win 2000, there is a network drive (E that shows up in My Computer and on it is the shared folder I want. - In XP I can't even find how I can do the Win 2000 Computers Near Me function so that I can find the Mac. Getting tired and desperate here - in day 3 of this much dreaded conversion (I hesitate to say upgrade until I figure out how much I will lose). ??? Can this distinguished group help me through getting to the shared folder on the Mac from my new, in process, XP Pro VM creation ??? Much thanks for your ideas.
No thanks to any tech support here, but I spent many hours more trying to wade through the Mac and XP networking which is not my forte and pitifully explained in any doc I found. I noted that my old Win 2000 VM had a service on the LAN called 'Parallels Shared Folders Network Provider'. This service was NOT on my new XP VM. The only thing that I could imagine was the cause was either the VM config or possibly Parallels Tools. Found nothing under config. So I reloaded the Parallels Tools on the running XP VM even though I could find NOTHING in Parallels documentation to indicate that one should do so. It rebooted and when it came back up it scared me with all of the Windows apps that it cycled through using Parallels SmartSelect dialog box and updated. When I got back I looked under My Computer and there was a network disk that I thought was only XP storage that I mistakenly set up in my fumbling attempts. But when I opened it, I found my Mac shared files just like in the old Win 2000 VM. All I can figure is that the 'Parallels Shared Folders Network Provider' was missing and that reloading Parallels Tools in the new XP VM solved the problem. Don't know exactly what I did, but the end result is I have the much needed shared folders/files. Hope this helps others.
USB2 Driver Just another hint when installing a new Win XP (not a quick update). My printer would not work although it did fine on the Mac side. Turns out the XP disk along with both the SP1a and SP3 did not install a USB2 (not just USB1) driver. Doing so on the re-installed printer software brought 'er up. Hope this helps somebody struggling like I am. On day 5 of getting problems resolved or figuring out if there are acceptable work arounds - that's a long time to avoid any data updates that might complicate the upgrade. The last big one is whether all of those old MS-DOS apps, some written by me, will run. PS: The Mac shared files are important to allow the old 2000 VM to store conversion data for when the new XP VM is active and correcting problems.
