I have a USB hard drive that has two partitions on it (Mac + Windows) which is really convenient for copying files across the many Mac and Windows machines I come across on a weekly basis.

However. Parallels on my mac will not start the VM (Bootcamp partition) if the USB drive is attached.

Not only do I have to unmount the drive, but I must physically disconnect it before Parallels will start the VM.

This is a major pain. Especially if I am actually using the drive for something (like burning a DVD, or copying a large file, which I often do) then I have to wait ***ages*** before I can disconnect the drive and start the Parallels VM.

Please, make Parallels only look on the internal drive for a bootcamp partition.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!!!!!

Especially since Apple's Bootcamp installer will only install on an internal drive, AND windows won't boot (without hacks) off a USB drive.

Please please please make Parallels ignore USB drives in whatever it is that prevents the VM from starting. (Identifying which partition is the Bootcamp partition, perhaps).

    (Feature request)

Even better.... let the user choose which partition to boot off.... then you could actually install windows on an external drive for using with parallels.....!!

    Matt

ps. everything else about Parallels is great. So it extra sucks when I can't use it for 20 minutes while I'm burning a DVD!!!

    See Post #16.

I had the same issue you did and once I found out the disk ID of my bootcamp partition using the df command in a Terminal session and added is as ;disk0s3 after the words Boot Camp in the IDE settings then I was good to go.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Snakeeyes!

    That's awesome.

So, there is a simple fix. All we need is a simple user interface to replace the annoying error message!
