    I still can't get my Windows XP VM to find my Mac External Modem. For over two years I've been following all the threads with this same problem and can't believe Parallels hasn't come up with a "short" fix for this problem. I was told I had to upgrade to Parallels 3.0. I did. I was told I had to upgrade my BUILD. I did. I now am using Build 4560. But the Windows VM still can't find the modem. I tried that 10 step program and updated SerialClient and it worked for 1 day. Finally, I gave up. But now after several months I find I HAVE to use the Windows Internet Explorer for my website. So, PLEASE, does Parallels have any good news for me on how to get my Windows XP to recognize my Mac External Modem. I'm using a new iMac, Mac OSx 10.4.10. Thank You!

    Hello Ned,

    Could you give a link on the modem model you are using?
    Why don't you use Shared Networking?
    What happens when you are trying to connect your Mac External Modem to VM?

    Best regards,

    Thanks for the reply.

    Not sure what the "link" is but the Apple USB Modem Ext Item No# is: APLMA034Z/A. I purchased it on 5/29/07 and it works fine on the Mac side. The "thread" I was using in Forums was under "Mac Ext Modem" where I explained my problem with trying to use the "Ten Step" work-around. I got stuck on Step 7 when I clicked the CONNECT button. It stays as CONNECT and does not go to DISCONNECT as explained. I've been at this for almost a year. The main problem is that when I try to get online from Windows I always get an error message that Windows can't find the modem even though it is listed under Modem in the Control Panel.

    Shared Networking? I know that "Shared Folders" is clicked between Mac and Windows.
    Any help would be appreciated. I use dial up with Earthlink on a new iMac (bought last year) and Windows XP and Parallels 3.0 Build 4560.
    Thanks,

    PS/Would I have these same problems with a high-speed cable connection rather than dial-up? Would I need an Ext modem then? Just wondering.

    Hello Ned,

    Thank you for the provided information.

    I did not check this workaround on last Mac OS X versions and PD builds.

    I would recommend you to connect the modem to Mac side and use it from your VM via Shared Networking. If you open Configuration Editor -> Network adapter you will be able to choose the mode of connection.

    It is not a problem of cable or dial-up.

    Best regards,

    I have done what you suggested but still have same poroblem. I always get an error message of a "Hardware Failure" when I try to get online from Windows. I went through all ten steps and always have a problem with Step 8 to find Apple-USB-Modem.inf file. It never opens. So I continue the other steps and Finish. The.com1 and modem info says they are working properly. I installed Windows XP again and now have two Windows OS as I can't delete the first one. This has been going on for a year. Is Parallels ever going to fix this problem?

    Hello Ned,

    Please try the following:

    In you Guest OS go to Parallels Desktop menu bar -> Devices and enable your modem;
    Insert Leopard installation DVD in your Mac and stop installation process if it starts;
    In Parallels Desktop menu bar -> Devices -> CD/DVD-Rom enable default CD-Rom and wait till drivers installation finishes.

    Your modem is supposed to start working after this.

    Best regards,
