I just received my new MacBook Pro m1 chip. I want to move all my files and data from the old mac to the new mac without moving parallels and windows. If I use migration assistant will parallels and windows be moved also. If so can I then delete or uninstall windows 10 and parallels desktop. I realize they will not work on the new mac. I may at a later date put parallels on the new mac with windows 11. Any advice would be helpful.
You don't say what your old Mac is but I'd advise to do a fresh install, especially if your old Mac is Intel-based. I have heard of a few people who've experienced various problems using the Migration Assistant for Intel to M1, though the problems could have occurred for other reasons. I've done a fresh install and no problems... so far.
I can't find anywhere else to post this: I went from Intel i9 MacBook Pro to MacBook Pro M1 and just today installed Parallels For Windows 18.02. At least I *think* I ran migration assistant from the i9 Pro because I *could have* run it from my Air m1... There was no image on my new MacBook Pro for bootcamp, which is why I'm not too sure from which machine I did the migration. when I ran Parallels 18.02 install on the MacBook Pro M1 it flashed an error "volume..../bootcamp not found...please select volume" when I hit "continue" the install hung on "Creating." I found nothing on search. On a whim I created new image using XFAT and named it "Bootcamp" It worked. I messaged support and pretty much received an irrelevant answer. I'm wondering if anyone happens to read this and either knows what happened or had the same thing happen to them, please could they respond? Thnx.
thank you for the reply. Initially I created a new image as you suggested and named it "Parallels" and this did not work. The only name that worked was "Bootcamp." My theory is something in a configuration file for Parallels "stuck" during migration assistant and absent blitzing the offending file (and finding it) the simplest solution (luck) was to rename it "Bootcamp" - and then it worked, downloaded Windows 11, and installed. Am hoping someone else surfaces with the same issue.... or someone else sees this who has helped users with the same issue and who works with Parallels. In the olden days this sort of forum would have been viewed/monitored by Quality Assurance/Tier 2 Support. Who knows, now, if that still happens.
