trying to delete win xp vm

i first installed windows xp vm and then i set up bootcamp and have decided to use bootcamp as the one windows environment so i then set up a bootcamp vm. now i want to delete the win xp vm but every time i select it in the vm menu list, it launches and then i can't use the delete function to remove it. what steps should i take?

i figured out what the problem was, windows was trying to start up and asking me to start in safe or normally, so it must not have shut down properly. once i booted normally, the vm window stayed open once i shut down windows properly and then i could delete the vm.
