My original goal was to install an Ubuntu 12.10 guest (with Unity) and use coherence, but it fails to truly enter Coherence mode (just a full-screen desktop). I understand the 3D/desktop effects makes this untenable, and that there is no true solution for 12.10 Unity. I tried XUbuntu 12.10, but the result was the same (despite XUbuntu not using Unity). I tried Ubuntu 12.04 and the distro as downloaded from Ubuntu.com as of 1/26/13 works in Coherence. However, if I upgrade all packages, Coherence is broken. I tried logging in with Unity 2D, but that doesn't help. I also tried re-installing Parallels Tools, but that doesn't help, either. What causes it to break? Obviously, if the distro as downloaded (prior to upgrading packages) works in Coherence, it is something that is upgraded that breaks the functionality. The existing threads about this on the forums don't seem to provide information or a solution other than to install the Gnome desktop manager. Thanks for the help. I'd really like to find a stable Unity+Coherence solution... and don't mind using a LTS distro if that is absolutely necessary. I have a mid-2009 17" MBP (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) running Parallels 8 (Build 8.0.18354) with Parallels Tools (v??, not sure how to find that). JW
