Unbuntu desktop 6.10 installs fine, but I don't want the GUI--just a lightweight server for my VM to test out web apps and content before I push to my dedicated linux server. The server install seems proceed well but on final re-boot hangs with an interrupt error: "Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294" I tried several DLs of the iso, installed from iso and burned CDs--all fail exactly the same way.
This is a common problem with Ubuntu. A solution was shared in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=294712 It creates a non-windowed installation which is perfect for what you're after. The solution is 5 or 6 posts into the thread. Check back if it works for you.
tried Ubuntu Server 6.10 and failed at boot: tried to enter 'server' -> not found, neither was server-expert. So I started install acpi=off, didn't see the error, but I don't want the UI, so I bailed out and I'll try the regular ISO and see what optional installs I can do to not get the UI. I'll give this one more try and then I am going to stick with Debian. Pretty lame. teh VMware beta didn'[t have this issue but its sucks in other ways.
tried regular server install next... Rather than the alternate install I tried above, I tried eh regular server install using: boot: install acpi=off lacpi=off Still got the errors during the post-install re-boot. Htat's it, I have wasted teh time from over dozen installs now. Fagittaboutit. Going back to Debian.
Try this: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=5461 That works for me with Ubuntu 6.06 Server and 6.10 Server. Good Luck!
