I am a Mac consultant and have successfully installed Parallels Desktop for Mac with Win XP several times without difficulty. Now I have a client with a new iMac running Mac OS X 10.4.9 and 2GB RAM. Trying to install Parallels with Windows XP Home, Upgrade Edition. (I have never done this with an Upgrade edition before.) 1st attempt: Installed Parallels build 3188 and used assistant to install Win XP home. All seemed to proceed fine and when prompted I disconnected from the CD drive, ejected the CD and inserted the old Win 98 CD and reconnected VM to CD to verify upgrade eligibility. Repeated process to again switch CDs. Again all seemed to proceed fine until it got to the part where the status bar said "Installing Drivers" and said that there were 32 minutes remaining. It hung there. 2nd attempt: Deleted VM from first attempt. Repaired disk permissions and rebooted. Otherwise same as above. This time it failed saying 37 minutes left. Waited and waited (45 minutes or more) and it never got any further. 3rd attempt: Completely removed Parallels Desktop (manually) and did a fresh install of the version on the Parallels Installer CD (November 1? I don't recall the build number). This time I performed a manual install with all the default settings. When it asked for the Win 98 CD I swaped them as before but it just hung there. Eventually Parallels said that it could not read the CD and never proceeded any further. 4th attempt: Same as above with the same result. Time to go home This is my first installation of an Windows XP Upgrade Edition but I see in the forums others have had success doing this; although these postings are pretty old. Has anyone done a similar install in 10.4.9, and/or a recent build of Parallels? I notice in the FAQs that the installation assistant does not support Win XP Upgrade Edition. Does it support it as a manual install? Any ideas? TIA.
