Hi Guys We have been using 2x Universal Printing now for a couple of years on v9 - most of the time it works fine. With the advent of XG, the printing model has changed & whilst we have read everything we can find about this, we still seem to be drawing a blank. On XG we can print fine in legacy mode ie Universal Printer and the client set to Specific Only but when we change to the newer mode, it all gets a bit wobbly. When the server is set to new (DEFAULT - %PRINTERNAME% for %USERNAME% by 2X) mode, the printers from the client are succfessfully mapped to the server when the client connects and can be seen in Devices & Printers on the server. Good so far. However, no combination of settings on the client will now print anything as nothing is sent from the server. The items "Do not set default printer on the server" and "Show client printer preferences window before printing" do not seem to do anything. The 2x manuals state that the mapped printers will be available in the order that they are displayed in the client ie only the 1st in the list will be used to print if the ALL setting is chosen on the client - how can we change the order of printers in the client? The only combination that will print anything is server set to legacy mode ie Universal Printer and Specific Only set on the client with the appropriate printer ticked. Have we completely misunderstood this ? It should be a great idea but the last piece does not seem to be finished !! We are running 2008 R2 servers. We assume that 2z will install 64 bit versions of everything when running on a 64 bit platform. Running XG 10.1 build 1227 on servers Any thoughts? SpringBox
Ah ha - progress.... Just upgraded to latest client - 2X Client for Windows 64-bit - v10.1.1230 Printing now works in "new XG mode" but the file sizes are enormous ie 340k for a legacy "2x Universal Printing" file but 5.4 Mb for the same document the "new XG mode" using a mapped HP Laserjet. The processing time (even on a decent PC) is too long to use this in production but at least it works. We have our Universal Printer set to 300*300 DPI for speed but most mapped printers would be 600*600 or greater - could this be the cause? Almost there 2x - it will be great when its sorted. Any comments very welcome... SpringBox
More testing... It seems that a V10 2x Universal Printing download is about 10 times the size of a v9 download of the same document to be printed. Unfortunately there is not a linear relationship betwen the processing times on the local PC. A v9 document which takes 30 seconds from pressing print to paper start in the printer, with v10 takes 5 minutes. The 30 seconds is pushing it in a production environment and no customer would wait the extra time. Why are the file sizes so much bigger and how can they be made smaller? Any ideas ? If we switched on the new v10 printing method, the files would be bigger again - one step at a time... SpringBox
