Perhaps like a few people like myself have waited to update OS X as well as my version of Parallels since "if it ain't broke..." Parallels actually runs very well, but I don't like the potential security holes in the older version of OS X.

I intend to update from OS X 10.7.5 Lion to El Capitan. I currently have Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac running Windows 7. I intend to keep Win 7 and hopefully this build of data I currently have. What is the upgrade path and the order in which I should make the upgrades and keep my Win 7 build?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi JohnM24,
Kindly take a back up for your Windows.pvm file before initiating the Mac OS upgrade so that you don't lose your existing Windows. By default all virtual machines are stored in /Documents/Parallels or in /Users/Shared/Parallels folders. You can check this link for available backup option for Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine.
Note : Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac is not supported by Parallels any more and it is not compatible with El Capitan Mac OS. So you will have to purchase a full version of Parallels Desktop 12 in order to run your Windows 7 virtual machine with El Capitan. Thanks.

  3. Hi Dhana,
Just to make sure there's no confusion: given that Parallel V7 isn't compatible with El Capitan and V12 not compatible with Lion, do we have to upgrade first Mac OS and then replace Parallels V7 with V12?
    Thanks
