I have Parallels 9 running on a Mac with OS X 10.9.5. Now I want to upgrade both, namely Parallels 9 --> Parallels 13 and OS X 10.9.5 --> High Sierra.
The question is what to do first? Can it happen if I upgrade first the Mac OS X Version that my Parallels 9 will not launch anymore. Or if I do it the other way round (first upgrade Parallels 9 to Parallel 13) that the new version (Parallels 13) can not be launched under Mac OS X 10.9.5?

    Thanks in advance
    Anton

  2. Hi AntonG1. Please note that Parallels Desktop 9 is not compatible with macOS High Sierra and Parallels Desktop 13 is not compatible with OS X 10.9.5. Hence you need to upgrade the macOS as well as Parallels Desktop to the latest version at the same time. Please take a backup of the virtual machine by referring this article so that you can use the same virtual machine after upgrading your macOS and Parallels Desktop to the latest version.

Thanks for the info! I periodically backup everything on my Mac with the TimeMachine - so there should be no problem with data loss. What I don't understand is how I can upgrade MacOS and Parallels Desktop AT THE SAME TIME. How should this work?
    Thanks in advance
    Anton

Please do it thus: (Ignore the first three steps if you're sure that Windows has been properly backed up.)
1.) Shut Windows down (as opposed to simply suspending it).
2.) Locate the virtual machine file on the Mac (it is a file with the extension '.pvm').
3.) Make a copy of this file and move the copy to an external hard drive with a Mac-compatible file system [e.g., exFAT, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) etc.,].
4.) Upgrade your Mac to High Sierra.
5.) Install Parallels Desktop 13 (you must have bought a full license).
6.) Move the .pvm file copy from the external hard drive back to the Mac (or restore a backup copy from Time Machine, whichever applies), place it under Macintosh HD/Users/(username)/Parallels, double-click on it and run it [select 'Moved' (or 'Use Current') when asked to choose between 'Moved' and 'Copied' (or 'Use Current' and 'Create New')].

O.k. Thank you! So, if I understood you right concerning point 5.), I cannot upgrade from Parallels Desktop 9 to 13 (which would be cheaper), but instead of I have to buy a new full license, correct?

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately this info is not (or if, then maybe any way in a tricky way) available when I want to click the BUY-button of Version 13. In other words: I have upgraded to High Sierra. After upgrading I noticed that Parallels 9 is not running anymore. Since I have already Parallel 9 I bought Parallel 13 as an upgrade Version, but it is not running. What can I do now to solve the problem? Hopefully there will be another solution than to buy a new Parallel 13 Full version, I will be extremly disappointing if the money for the just bought upgrade Version will be lost.

Hello ChristofK1, According to our licensing policy, an upgrade to Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac is supported from Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac and Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac. If your previous version key is for Parallels Desktop 10 or earlier, please visit the Parallels Online Store to purchase a full license for Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac: Kindly follow the instructions from this link < https://bit.ly/2Gx2xwk >. In this case, we can go ahead and process a full refund for your upgrade purchase so you can purchase the full version and activate it directly.

Thank you very much for the answer, this sounds helpful. However, if I will buy the new licence vor V13, how can I declare, that with this new licence the upgrade Version should be refunded? From the form on the mentioned website I cannot see a any field that the new licence shall replace the upgrade version. Do I have to reject from the upgrade contract first or to do/add anything else? So how it will be clear that not both, the upgrade licence and the new licence will be used but only the new licence?

You have to just confirm us to process the refund and we will do the rest. Once refunded the upgrade key will be deactivated and also both keys will not be active on a single Mac at the same time.

Are you using the new key from your purchase or still the old key?

Yes, the new key. But anyway it feels that it is using the old files. By the way, I am running Windows 7, I hope that this is still supported?
Or do I have to do a deinstallation first?

Yes, it will be. Your virtual machine will not be upgraded if you upgrade Parallels Desktop. If you need further assistance or clarification, let us know.

    Hello,
I am running OSX 10.9.5, Parallels 9, Windows 7, and Microsoft Office 2013. I need to upgrade my Mac's operating software, as it is not working properly/supporting various applications. However, I want to keep Office 2013, and Windows 7 if possible (I don't really want to buy all new software, and I don't really want to upgrade to Windows 10). Can you tell me if Parallels 13 will work with Windows 7? In which case i can upgrade to Parallels 13 and Mac High Sierra.
    Thank you!

Hello HeidiE1, thank you for your question. Your configuration looks very similar like mine. So don't worry, it works. The most important thing is that you have to buy a parallels 13 Full version, because upgrade version is not compatible to parallels 9.
If you bought already by mistake an upgrade version, you can have a refund, but you will need a confirmation for the wrong bought upgrade. This is what you can request for in the support of parallels web site.
I installed high sierra before parallels, if the other way round will be better I don't know.
The installation process is quite time consuming. Particularly for parallels it needed me a lot of starting and closing the software until it was rumning in an acceptable speed. I recommend 8GB for parallels.
Windows 7 is supported. Don't be confused due to so many links to Windows 10.
Don't hesitate to ask me if you will need any further help.
