I am using Parallels on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.11. When running Parallels if I connect an MP3 player using an USB connection I receive the message: USB device you are trying to connect to the virtual machine is being used by another application. Close that application or unplug the device and plug it again. Then try to connect the device again. Needless to say, that doesn't work. I have used the Configuration Editor to check the Connect USB device automatically option. That didn't help either. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello BilRan, What Parallels Desktop build are you using? Did you try checking / unchecking the device in Parallels Desktop menu bar -> Devices? Best regards, Xenos
Reply to Xenos Thanks for your comments. The parallels build is for Windows XP. When I start Parallels in the standard manner and then plug in my MP3 player, which is a Rio Carbon, it does not show under Devices->USB. Oddly enough, it doesn't show up as an icon on the Apple desktop either. When I quit Parallels the icon will then appear on the Apple desktop. If I start Parallels with the Command key depressed to stop the virtual machine and then start the virtual machine by the control on the right of the screen, Devices->USB will list the existence of the Rio, but it still does not recognize it in the program I am trying to run (Audible Manager). Clicking on the Rio line in Devices->USB makes it go away, but it does not reappear if I physically unplug and replug the USB connector.
BilRan, please try these steps: 1. Start Windows guest OS , go to "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "System" -> "Device Manager" and uninstall all devices under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" (right-click the devices). 2. Shut down your VM. 3. In VM Configuration Editor, delete the USB Controller and start Windows guest OS again. 4. Wait 5-10 minutes until Windows finishes the driver setup. 5. Shut down Windows. 6. Add "USB Controller" back to your VM configuration and start Windows again. By PD build I mean - is it 5160? 5582? another one? You can check it this way. Best regards, Xenos
Xenos: Still problems Thanks for your suggestions. My build is 3186. I tried the procedure you suggested, but still received the same error statement about the device already being used that started this thread. Two questions: 1) When I added back the USB controller at the last step it asked the question: Automatic Disconnect any new USB devices from Mac OS X and connect to the virtual machine? with a check box for a yes response. I checked it yes. Should I have? 2) Should I have connected my MP3 player before doing the above? I didn't. Again, thanks for your comments and suggestions.
BilRan, you should update your VM to build 3214 (or upgrade, if possible). This does not really matter what you answered when adding the USB controller as you can change these settings in Configuration Editor. Best regards, Xenos
