Virtual machine cannot be started because of the following problem:

The virtual Hard Disk 1 image file /Users/normantaer/Documents/Parallels/Microsoft Windows XP 3/winxp.hdd could not be found

    hi,
so obviously question how was your VM created? ;) Maybe you copied it from somewhere and not all necessary files were transfered.

It has been working properly for two months. It was created using a valid Parallels disk and a valid windows xp sp2 microsoft disk.

Well, sounds if *.hdd in spotlight turned out nothing, sounds like it got deleted and you need to do a re-install. Unless, you set it up using a BootCamp partition.

Can I re-install over the present installation or do I have to uninstall and re-install?

Uninstall and re-install is always best.
