Virtual Machine Menu problem

Under Virtual Machine Menu / Configure / General, trying to change memory allocation. The slider and the MB window are both locked (the lock symbol at the bottom left is unlocked). The panel says, "Some of the settings on this page cannot be changed until the virtual machine is shut down." When the virtual machine shuts down, the panel and the entire Virtual Machine Menu disappear.

How do I change the memory allocation? Thanks.
