I am an ASP.NET developer (using Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server, MySQL) about to get a new iMac. Anyone use Visual Studio 2008 with Parallels? What are your thoughts/recommendations? What is the reliability/performance compared to the latest VMWare Fusion? If I program thru Parallels, then later use Boot Camp, can I, in Boot Camp, see/use all my project files, etc... that I was accessing in Parallels? Thanks!
Vs2008 I've used VS2008 for awhile on my MBP, and it works quite well. I just put it in full screen mode and can use everything perfectly. The performance is fine, and was even faster than my co-workers regularly issued laptop. I just got a new Mac Pro, and I am going through setting up the machine to use for Parallels. I've found the use on the MacBookPro worked well enough, and coding in VS2008 is my fulltime job. I don't use Bootcamp, but yes, you should be able to use both projects through both methods. I haven't used VMWare yet, though I'm going to go through the process of trying out Parallels and VMWare to see which one is faster. Christopher
Hi. I actually have been using a XP VM in Parallels running all versions of Visual Studio products. Works very well for development. I am using a unibody mac 2.4. If you have any questions let me know. Chris
Been using VS 2003 and 2005 under Parallels on various Macs. To be perfectly honest it runs better for me than on my PC at work. I'm sure part of this is because I can keep the windows install leaner. Enjoy it!
Visual Studio 2005/2008 with IMAC 4 GM of RAM Hi Chris, I plan to buy Imac with 4GB of RAM . I wanted your suggestions as I am also a web developer and will work a lot in Visual Studio 2005/2008. Is the performance good when you install Visual Studio 2005/2008 with Parallels 4 on IMAC? I plan to install Sql Server 2005/2008 too? How much memory should be allocated to windows with Parallels? Is it easy to install Windows on IMAC? I have heard that there is no sound on IMAC once you install Windows? Did you face that issue or the installation was pretty smooth? Please provide your valuable suggestions as I am planning to buy IMAC with parallels sometime this week.
Failed to start monitoring changes to \\psf\Home\...... Guys im trying to run Visual Studio 2005 on parallels 6 on my OSX 10.6.5. While installing windows xp i chose the option work as a Mac, therefore its using all Mac's file system to store files. when i try to run a website project it say Error 1 Failed to start monitoring changes to '\\psf\Home\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\WebSites\WebSite1'. if i create the project in the windows C drive then this error goes away but the website never appears in the browser and after a while it says time out Please help
bootcamp you need to use bootcamp to get the full effect of all windows applications, including visual studio. virtual machines are great. But i have problems with vis studio on it. my saved programs sometimes dont open. boot camp does not have any problems and you get to use all the specs of your mac instead of just half.(or whatever you assign) use bootcamp. It runs windows better than most pcs do
I know the post is quite old by now, but wanted to pass along for any future readers that I had the same error as above ("Failed to start monitoring changes to '\\psf\Home\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\WebSites\WebSite1'.") but solved all of the issues by moving the "WebSites" folder to be directly off of the root of C: under "My Computer" rather than using the "My Websites" under "My Documents". Haven't done a ton with it yet, but so far so good.
