Nice concept... a NAS that works with Mac and with Windows and with Dropbox and a host of other things. I brought one home and started the setup which promptly failed when it could not find the NAS on the network. After failing to locate information on the forums and support pages I called user support. I immediately revealed that my Windows 7 was running on a Mac. This did not deter the very helpful user support person and off we went testing alternatives to connecting to the drive. After about 30 minutes we had found one method that worked. This method got me to a window where I could drag folders from the desktop into folders on the drive. Dang... zero ability to work with backup software, zero ability to work with Dropbox. What I had was a really dumb mirrored drive which could handle 2 TB of data...and it only cost $349 plus tax! A few days before I picked up a 5 TB drive for $139. Needless to say the my cloud product is not a solution for working with the Guest Windows installation. So I went back to my original plan.
Create two partitions on the 5 TB HD using GUID . Format one of the partitions to work with Time Machine (Mac OS Extended Journaled) using Disk Utility in Yosemite. Set Time Machine to not backup the vpm. Format the other partition NTFS using the Disk Management utility in Windows 7 and find some software that will allow me to setup backup schedules for various files on the windows side. And then I will need to figure out how to configure the cloud piece...
This will work but does not have the robustness of a mirrored solution coupled further backed by a cloud backup. I am posting this in the off chance it can save someone buying one of these drives to work with a Windows Guest.
