Why does turning sound off in PD cut CPU?

When I am running a PD VM with Windows XP, with Windows at idle, it consumes about 15% of the CPU on my MacBook Pro 17" with 2GB Ram.

When I disable sound in PD, that CPU usage drops to under 8%, so approximately half.

I know I've seen this mentioned before on the forum, but couldn't find anything via a search.

Does anyone know why turning sound on in PD causes CPU usage at idle to double? Is there anything than can be changed within Windoes to prevent this much usage?
