Windows 7 stuck on Shut down (Parallels 8)

Discussion in 'Windows Virtual Machine' started by Parallels User, Mar 25, 2013.

1. Hi All,

I am on my first mac and have just downloaded the demo trial of parallels (well I have 11 days left). I have successfully converted my Win 7 PC over the network and it boots and seems to run just fine. The issue I have is when I want to reboot or shutdown windows starts shutting down, gets to the 'Shutting Down' screen and thats it, I have left it for hours and it is still on the same screen, the little circle is still spinning so it doesn't appear to have hung. I am using Parallels 8 (the latest version on the site) and windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

If I stop the VM from the parallels controls (select 'shut down' twice) it does shut down but for me that is definitely not what I want from a new product, it has to at least start well :)

Other information, the source Windows install was onto an SSD and my MBP+R is SSD as well.

I have seen so many of these posts but not one with a solution. This would be a deal-breaker for me so I have only a few days to get this sorted out, I hope that the community can help or is there a way to log a call with Parallels?

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris,

Quick question: Have you install Parallels tools/or did they install?

3. Hi Kat,

Thanks for the quick response! I did find a post somewhere telling someone to reinstall Parallels tools. It did install automatically but I have tried to reinstall again and done it again now with the same result.

Regards
Chris

5. One thing is that the HDD type was set to AHCI on the physical box but now once it is virtual the only options are SATA/SCSI/IDE...it is set to SATA. From my experience it would normally not boot if the drive type is wrong...just thought I would mention it

6. Ok I changed the setting to 'Close Window' on shutdown now the machine had a BSOD with BAD_POOL_CALLER. After that it automatically booted up and I have tried to shut it down again but it is hanging in 'Shutting Down' again.

7. I need to get the family to bed now but I will check back in the morning. Thanks

8. Does anyone have any information that may be able to help? I tried to log a ticket but need to have purchased the license. Its a bit of a catch 22 as I don't want to buy the license if the product doesn't do what I need...I guess I need to rely on the community for the next 10 days and if it is not working then try another solution...

Hi Chris,

I have been doing some research, on Windows hanging on shutdown, it appears that this could be caused by several different issues.

"Shutdown issues are generally caused by a program and/or process that is refusing to exit gracefully. Shutdown issues can also be caused by old/poorly written drivers so make sure all drivers are updated, particularly on Windows Vista and Windows 7. "

Some of the reason and their solutions:

• Power options, try restoring the default settings.
• Control Panel>Power Options>Change Plan Settings(for which ever plan you have selected)> Restore default settings for this plan
If this didn't do it

• Do you have Windows firewall on? Please turn it off.

10. I am getting the BAD_POOL_CALLER BSOD on most reboots now...

11. Hi Kat,

Thanks for sticking with me! I have disabled the firewall and set the power setting back to the default recommended setting. Now I am not getting a BSOD any more but it is back to hanging on shutdown.

In solution centre I get an error that says 'fix issues with this VM' and it says that a driver is not installed. I have installed Parrallels Tools about 5 times so far...not sure where to go from here..

Regards
Chris

12. Same happens in safe mode (BSOD). I guess my next step is to try and decipher the dump from the BSOD to see if it is anything in particular...perhaps a specific driver?

14. Hi Kat,

Here is a picture of the BSOD, I have done the clean boot. After setting the settings windows hung on 'shutting down' but then on the second reboot I got the attached BSOD. I am going to try and do the parallels tools reinstall now. Are you any good at checking the .dmp files? These are the dump files that are created. I can post them too if they help.

15. Ok I have followed the instructions for removing AV and removing Parallels tools (with a restart between them) after the parallels tools uninstall there was another BSOD on reboot which is attached (different one this time)

But now the VM will not start, it is on the black screen with the scrolling green bar with Microsoft Windows underneath. I did make a snapshot just in case but should I go ahead and revert? I will wait for your feedback. At this point windows will not boot.

Hi Chris,
Before you revert to the snapshot, please see if you can open the vm in safe mode and install Parallels tools.

To enter safe mode select the vm( but don't turn it on)
from the top menu near the apple select Virtual Machine>Safe Mode
Once the vm has started please install Parallels Tools >Shutdown vm > Apply changes>restart vm normally.

Error: Stop:0x000000c2 This error is usually a driver issue and display adapter (video) driver is the most suspect though it
could be others. Antivirus/antispyware/security programs, hardware (heat) and major software issues
can also cause the error. .... Memory issues are another possibility after drivers.

17. OK when I try and use parallels safe mode then I get cyclic bsod. I get the choice to enter recovery mode or boot normally. I will try again when I get to work as it's a bit tough on the train. Do I need to try and get into windows safe mode too? I have for now discarded the safe mode changes. I will update you soon. I must say that I am thinking I need to rebuild windows fresh. It would save a lot of aggravation LOL.

18. Ok so I have tried repeatedly with just BSOD's on boot. I tried Windows repair and it said that there was a problem with a driver but was unable to repair it, I have attached the screenshot. I will have to fail back to the original snapshot and try again.

Hi,
Sorry about this I posted from home this morning, the post never made it to the forum.

Try booting in safe mode:(this is a window safe mode)from the Virtual Machine drop down menu> safe mode> if it gives you the option of boot normal do that. Then install/reinstall Parallels Tools in your vm. >shutdown> accept changes> restart the vm.

EDIT: Do you get the BSOD in safe mode? If you do you might want to consider creating a new vm as you suggested earlier, your snapshot will still have the same Microsoft driver issue that caused the BSOD. Creating a new vm will eliminate this.

20. Hi Kat,

Ok things went from bad to worse and eventually I gave up. I have just used boot camp instead. Too bad really because the functionality of parallels was a definite nice to have but it was not worth the headache. Thanks for trying I appreciate the time you spent on this with me. I think that Parallels could get more clients if they offered some kind of support for the trial, people usually wont use the trial unless they were thinking of buying the software so it makes sense.

Cheers
Chris
