Just migrated from Win7 to Win8.1 in Parallels 9.0 (all 64-bit). Using Parallels in Coherence mode with 2 of 16 gigs RAM assigned to Windows on 17" MacBook Pro.

The Windows 8.1 icon resides on my Dock, and goes full-screen when launched. If I start IE from the Windows tiles, I get a full-screen IE on a new Maverick's desktop. If, instead, I start IE 11 from my "Windows 8.1 Applications" folder on my dock, I get IE in a window on my current desktop.

What is the difference between these two Internet Explorers? Can the Windows 8.1 IE be opened in a window? Can Windows 8.1, itself, be opened in a window? I used to be able to have the Windows 7 desktop appear in a window rather than full-screen.

    Thanks, Mark

    Hi msandrew,

Internet Explorer in Windows 8.1 is available in 2 flavors: as a Metro style app and as a desktop app.

The desktop app continues to fully support all plug-ins and extensions. The HTML5 and script engines are identical and you can easily switch between the different frame windows if you'd like.

Metro style IE provides all the main navigation keyboard shortcuts and mouse support you've come to expect - creating tabs, moving between tabs, closing tabs, entering addresses, searching, and more. But there is a big change in Metro style IE, which is the plug-in free experience.

Also you will not be able to run the Metro Style IE in a Window mode, because it is designed to run in Full Screen by default.

    Thanks,
    Manoj.
