I just upgraded my wife's computer to a new iMac and installed 10.5.4. I successfully installed Parallels 2.5 and then upgraded to Parallels 3.0. I opened and upgraded a virtual machine created on the defunct computer and XP starts and runs fine. Windows XP Home DSP OEI CD installation. Then I attempted to install windows upgrades and got a dialogue box stating

"Some updates were not installed, the following updates were not installed: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)"

How do I resolve this issue?

Thank you. I had found that link searching and tried Method 1 which did not solve the problem. I will now try method 2. It may be significant that I had tried to install software into the virtual machine. The installer attempted to install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 and failed. That is what prompted me to try to update windows.

If you have antivirus, disable it, this can be the cause

I installed Kaspersky Internet Security (at least I think I did, I cant figure out how to tell if it was successfully installed or not) and I have installed no other virus software.

OK, I attempted to resolve the problem with Method 2 and running the download produced the message that nothing needed to be installed because Windows Update Agent was already installed.

    excerpt from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

"Method 2: Download and install the Windows Update Agent

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

    1. Download the appropriate version of the Windows Update Agent to a known location. To do this, visit one of the following Web sites.

    AgentWindows, x86-based systems

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe"

Kasperky can block Internet downloads, try to disable it and install updates again

Add/Remove Programs does not indicate that Kaspersky or any other virus software is installed. It lists only IE7, Windows Installer 3.1 & Parallels Tools.

In add/remove programs check Show updates and remove Windows Update Agent

Windows Update Agent is not listed. But, Windows Genuine Validation Tool shows to have been installed on 2-17-2008.

I have screen shots of the installed updates. I couldnt figure out how to print or save the list.

Is Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) the Windows Update Agent?

Thank you John for your patience and for sticking with me on this problem. I tried both methods pointed to in the following link, taken from that thread, without success.

    To be specific, I tried

    and I tried

    Without success. Any other ideas?

OK, I have not installed SP3 yet. I wasnt sure I wanted to do that. Maybe that is the issue.

Also, when you say 'do not forget to restart VM' do you mean after removing all the installed updates and before attempting to update again?

OK, I think I am going to have to take a break. I have been working on this for almost 10 hours now and I need some sleep. I will attempt to remove the updates and reinstall after that. Thanks again for your help.
