I am running Lion OS and just installed the latest version of Parallels. I have shut it down, or at least I thought I did, but every application I try to run tries to run in Windows. I was trying to play a video I had just created and it wanted to open in Windows Media Player.

I only want the programs I WANT to run in Windows to run in Windows, everything else I want to run on my MBP.

    What did I do wrong?

Apparently, you associated certain file types with windows programs, I don't believe you did that to all file types but just some, right click on one of these files and select a different app to run it.

There's an app to manage those associations: http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/

You need to go into the Applications Options in the VM configuration and click the More Applications button to set things right. You don't need a separate app to do this. Fix it in the VM configuration.

The 'more applications' button has a limited scope (Newsgroups, FTP, RSS, Remote Access), it doesn't include media files like the example given by the user. Unless, if you use Application sharing, which I don't, you get more options in that menu, which I doubt. :)

This also means the user changed these associations via another method other than the VM configuration.

    Hi C:

    1. Disable application sharing.

On creation of a new VM and every VM reboot, Parallels creates applications in "~/Applications (Parallels)". These applications correspond to Start Menu shortcuts in the VM. Parallels does the same in the VM: Creates a Start Menu folder "Parallels Shared Applications" and populates this with native applications.

Shut down the VM and go to Virtual Machine > Configure ... > Options (Tab). Now select Applications and uncheck the Share Windows/Mac applications checkboxes. You can now delete the shared folders.

Note: Disabling application sharing also disables Crystal Mode.

    2. Change file associations.

Control-click on the file and select Get Info. In the "Open with" drop-down menu, select the correct application and click on Change All.
