When I insert a DVD, Windows recognizes it and the Mac DVD Player does not. How do I change this so that the Mac Application is the default player when a DVD is inserted?

check in Virtual Machine configuration --> Hardware --> CD/DVD --> Connect to. There should be Default DVD and _NOT_ an actual DVD rom name

you do have only one DVD drive, don't you?
    So, "default" means that drive.
Just disconnect virtual cd/dvd drive from virtual machine, and mac will recognize media inserted to you physical drive.

That's right what you are saying, but it should connect disk to Mac first. Anyway try to uncheck Connect and see if it helps
