I am an Apple technician and part of the Apple Consultant Network. I have a client with a brand new MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz w/ 2Gb of ram and a 256mb Video card (current 15" glossy top model.) I have a brand new copy of Windows XP SP2 purchased just an hour ago. I purchased (via download) Parallels v3.0 Build 5160 and installed today.

Every time I try to do an express (or custom) install the install fails as soon as the initial blue screen install process says "Starting Windows XP" there is a flash of BSOD type of junk and then it kicks me to the main Parallels Desktop screen.

When I click start it gets to "Boot from hard drive .... _" and does nothing more than eat my processor.

I have tried deleting the virtual machines and doing express and custom. I have not changed any default settings.

This MacBook Pro is BRAND NEW and is running OS 10.4.10 - but the build is probably different than yours...I have build 8R4061a not the general build of 10.4.10. This is the only thing I can think of as a possible cause of failure.

PLEASE ADMINS HELP. I am not going to pay for tech support when your product isn't working properly with this new mac.

I wanted to update that I managed to get a screenshot of the windows error

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

    SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
    If this is a"

That's all I could grab, but it is same message over and over. I've tried typical, custom and express installs. They all result in the same error.

The two thing that you need to make sure of :

That you have a full version of ms xp not just the update to sp2, that your copy of parrallels is not just the update from 2.5 to 3.

What are you selecting when installing xp: if you downloaded it, are you using a iso copy?
Make sure you give the location of iso. I am not at home right now so this is by memory but I think the screen that asks for type of install, pick other or 2nd option. that will then ask for cd or iso.

    Problem Description:

Errors occur when you try to install or update Parallels Desktop, create or open virtual machines, load the required drivers to the guest OS Guest operating system (guest OS) designates an operating system that runs under virtual machine control. One primary OS and multiple guest OSes can run at the same time on a single computer..

    Symptoms:

The symptoms may vary from Parallels Desktop installation/update failure to problems during its operation, like inability to load required drivers, create VM, etc.

    Cause:

Mac OS system failure or incorrect software update may result in inabilty to install Parallels Desktop or load system files properly. Working in Mac OS for long periods of time without restart may lead to some minor glitches to appear in the system as a whole.

    Solution:

To resolve these issues, do the following:

    1. Reboot your Mac.

    2. Browse the Applications folder. Open Utilities and launch Disk Utility.

    3. Select Macintosh HD on the left tab and click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

    4. Launch the Uninstall Parallels Desktop application (you can find it on the Parallels Desktop CD or in the downloaded Parallels Desktop DMG package) and follow the on-screen instructions. Please note that Parallels Uninstaller does not remove virtual machines from your Macintosh hard disk. It is important to use the Uninstaller of the Parallels Desktop version currently installed or newer.

    5. Delete these folders, if they can be found in your system:

/Library/StartupItems/Parallels/Applications/Parallels 6. You may also need to delete the following files (it is recommended to restart your Macintosh computer before deleting them):

    /System/Library/Extensions/vmmain.kext/System/Library/Extensions/hypervisor.kext/System/Library/Extensions/Pvsvnic.kext/System/Library/Extensions/ConnectUSB.kext/System/Library/Extensions/Pvsnet.kext7. Repeat steps 2-3.

    8. Restart your computer again and install Parallels Desktop for Mac.
