Hi. I cannot shut down or restart Windows XP in Parallels.

I can start or restart the VM, of course, but I can't actually restart Windows from within the VM. It gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and hangs indefinitely.

Other than an OS reinstall, any ideas how I can get Windows operating (restarting, shutting down) normally?

    Thanks!

I am having exactly the same problem. You aren't running the McAfee security suite in your windows VM by any chance? I am begining to suspect that is the culprit.

Yep. That's probably the problem with me too.

After removing McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 my VM would shut down normally. SO, it seems to be the problem. Also, I tried disabling AntiVirus & Firewall prior to removing and neither effort was successful!

Frankly, I thought the McAfee VS was more problematic than the virus risk, even on standalone PCs. It was constantly getting in the way of things, and throwing up banners.

I finally uninstalled it. Viruses are no fun, but there has to be a better solution than McAfee.

Norton and Mcafee have gone downhill in recent years. I suggest using the free version of AVG AntiVirus. There is a free AVG AntiSpyware too but I have not tried it myself.
