    system log weirdness

I noticed the following in the system log after resetting my "nvram boot_args="" " and re booting.

Sep 12 12:00:14 macpromac kernel[0]: Parallels Workstation Hypervisor started.
Sep 12 12:00:14 macpromac kernel[0]: Parallels Workstation VMM Main driver started.
    Sep 12 12:00:15 macpromac kernel[0]: com_parallels_kext_Pvsvnic: Ethernet address 00:01:23:45:67:89
Sep 12 12:00:17 macpromac SystemStarter[68]: Parallels VirtualMachine drivers (145) did not complete successfully
Sep 12 12:00:17 macpromac SystemStarter[68]: The following StartupItems failed to properly start:
    Sep 12 12:00:17 macpromac SystemStarter[68]: /Library/StartupItems/Parallels
Sep 12 12:00:17 macpromac SystemStarter[68]: - execution of Startup script failed

This is running the recent RC on MacPro 2x2.66

I was able to succesfully run Fedora Core 4. I havent really beat it up but I think it's otherwise working fine.

    Thoughts?

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.
4 Gig actual, 1 Gig for guest OS

2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"?
Have tried 3.5 and 2 gigs

    3. Your CPU count.
    Dual 3 GHz Xeons

    4. Your Mac model.
    MacPro1,1

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )
    10.4.7:8K1079

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)
    Darwin 8.7.2

If you feel ready to make some additional testing:

    0. NOTE: Make sure to backup all important data on your Mac - Panics can damage your unsaved data and lead to data loss.

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)
    Yes...

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?
    No...

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?
    Not tested...

Hope to see a fix soon so I can use at least 3.5 G of my RAM instead of 2G. Thanks,

    J^2

    More Panic Fun

    0. Short description of Panic condition (was it at VM power on, normal guest system work, or guest system software reboot, etc.). Is it possible to reproduce this Panic? Do you see any similarities between Panic conditions you observe?

If I limit to more than 2GB, I get an instantaneous panic as soon as I start a VM. If I limit to 2GB, and DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER PROGRAMS, I tend to run OK. If I set memory to 768, I usually hang on start requiring power off.

If I run enough programs to cause swapping, I'll get a panic while running a VM.

Fairly often, when I try to start Parallels, it won't start properly and will cause my cursor to stop moving. I'll have to hard reboot, but there's no panic. I can find no rhyme or reason for this. Note that I always sleep the machine one time before starting Parallels to allow VT-x to work.

Note: the friday panics were all with maxmem > 2040. The others are with 2048 while trying to install xp.

    1. Your Panic log.
    - Open Macintosh HD->Applications->Utilities->System Profiler
    - In the left tab find the "Software" group and select "Logs"
    - In the right tab find the "panic.log"
    - Save its contents to some text file and attach it to your post on the forum or just copy-paste to your post.

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.
2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"?

As described above, I have 4GB of RAM. If I limit to any more than 2048, I can't run at all. With 2048, I can usually run, as long as I don't do much of anything else.

    3. Your CPU count.

4 (two 3GHz Xeon dual core).

    4. Your Mac model.

    MacPro 3GHz

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )

    10.4.7:8K1124

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)

    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.3

If you feel ready to make some additional testing:

    0. NOTE: Make sure to backup all important data on your Mac - Panics can damage your unsaved data and lead to data loss.

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)

    haven't tried

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?

    See description above

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?

    haven't tried

    - Open Macintosh HD->Applications->Utilities->System Profiler

    Addendum

I'd like to add a little more to my post, above.

With a limit of 3500, if I don't run anything else, I can start a VM without crashing. If I run my normal set of applications, immediate panic.

I really think the problem here is that you seem to be sensitive to where your memory is allocated, even if that memory is 'virtually' above the 2048 point. So, 2048 will fail if, when you start Parallels, your pages end up with high addresses.

People with more memory tend to run more applications (which is why they got more memory in the first place), and thus tend to break that barrier earlier than others.

And you're not running into it much*at Parallels because you're tending to just run you and a debugger (or whatever), so you don't use much memory.

Maybe not, but it's a theory, and it's mine! ;)

    OK, now I'm positive.

I've just done a series of tests to confirm my theory. Even with memory not set "down" at all -- the full 4GB -- Parallels works as long as I don't run much else.

If I launch my normal set of apps (Mail, iChat, NetNewsWire, LaunchBar and the like -- nothing tricky, and the set of apps doesn't really matter -- the memory use does), it crashes instantaneously until I set memory down to 2GB. (Note that even with the normal set of apps, I'm not using more than about 1.1GB or so... but add a 512MB VM and... over 2GB.

Even at 2GB, if I run the normal set of apps, it will typically fail eventually, once memory is allocated above some amount (of VM).

So, I think the 4GB physical memory limit -- or even 3.5GB -- is kind of arbitrary, since -- at least according to my tests (which have been relatively extensive) it'll fail regardless of the setting, even down to 2GB, on a MacPro...

One last follow-up: I don't know why, but more often than not right now, I can't even get Parallels to start the VM successfully, even with no other applications running, after sleeping and with maxmem=2000. I click the button and the mouse...stops....moving...normally and nothing else happens.

I've tried with and without VT-x support, and it doesn't seem to matter.

I guess I give up until the next beta build, which I hope is a lot better. So close, yet so far.

I knows this sounds bizzare but I have tested it over and over and it is not a coincidence.

If I start iMAC and then start parallels (with the latest build) the machine reboots (crashes). If I selected "edit" and then power on windows xp it loads normally. At first I thought this was coincidental but it is not.

    FWIW

Also Parallels is not ready for prime time. It's not even "beta" yet when it crashes the machine so frequently. I've wasted hours updating images because they are corrupted (or so I thought). In a standard windows XP installation there are utilities (safe mode, system restore etc) to fix corrupted windows XP volumes...in parallels there are not. The only solution to this problem is to backup images regularly...but at sixty gigs per backup (I have 60 gigs windows installation) this is a real time and space hog.

Are we going to get a fix on the USB situation ? Having to assign USB drives everytime parallels starts is a real pain in the you know what...and then we only get 2.

Nice effort but I no longer rely on parallels for my windows xp needs.

I had posted above how the "legacy 2048" setting allowed me to start and run Parallels. I started Parallels, started Win XP and left them running over night. When I arrived to my Mac Pro (2.66 Ghz, 3 GB RAM) this morning, the KP screen was up over my screensaver. Here is the log for that panic:

KP in Mac Pro with 4 GB RAM

    0. The instant I click to activate the VM (ANY one, even newly created)
    1. Panic log is at end...
    2. 4 GB on the Mac, 512 MB on the guest
    3. 4 cores (what else does the Mac Pro have ?)
    4. Mac Pro
    5. Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8K1079)
    6. Kernel Version: Darwin 8.7.2

On the "optional" side, changing the VT-x option does not help, and I would need some more info to be able to adjust any of the settings you describe.

    PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!

    Thank you, J

1- KP Log at the end
They happens either when starting a VM (almost 1 times out of 2 or 3) or when the guest os is restarting.
I've been using regularly Windows NT 4SP6a and Solaris 10 and have had the same problem with both OSes.
Once the VM has successfully started I've yet to have any KP... and I've been running both for hours at a time.

Edit: Well that's it... I was running Solaris 10, this time with 1.5GB of ram and I started an Application Server... and Bang!! KP ! (See the before last trace) I had used it until now without a glitch, so this is certainly because I increased the VM memory from 512MB to 1.5GB... Damn!!

Edit 2: Reduced Guest OS memory to 1GB, this time the appserver started all right, but as soon as I tried to use the deployed web application... KP again.. At this time, Parallels had 260MB of real memory allocated... Well I think I'm going back to 512MB for now... Last trace included

Edit 3: Ran Solaris without any glitch for a few hours with 512MB, real memory usage grew to over 300MB without issue. The whole thing crashed down when I tried to start the NT VM...

    2. 5 GB on the Mac (2x2GB + 2x 512MB), 512 MB on the guest
Limited the available memory to 3500 with a maxmem=3500
    3. Obviously 2 dual-core 3Ghz Xeons
    4. Mac Pro
    5. Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8K1124)
    6. Kernel Version: Darwin 8.7.3

any chance of email notification for the "fix"?? - people who switched to MAC due to availability of Windows VM are giving up on MAC - c'mon, fellas, we relied on this (to the tune of $80 apiece, plus cost of Windows OS) -
    thanks!

The kernel panics are fixed, far as I can tell

Have you downloaded and tried their latest build, #1940? It was released nine days ago, and on my Mac Pro (with both 4 Gb and now 6 Gb of RAM) it works without a hitch and does not require me to lobotomize my memory.

I agree with you that a formal announcement here would have been nice, but I personally just responded to their e-mail message (all four copies of it) announcing "Parallels Releases Important Updates for Mac, Windows, Linux Virtualization Products!" last week...
