For me, Ubuntu has never been able to autoshutdown in Parallels. You might want to remove the quiet splash kernel flags from your current kernel at /boot/grub/menu.lst to get a more verbose output during startup/shutdown.

Parallels doesn't support ACPI so that's why any guest other than windows won't be able to trigger shutdown properly.

With Debian based systems, I use an utility called checkinstall. It allows me to create .deb files, that the package manager will handle from compiled code. So you can pretty much compile your own php and then install it through Synaptic.

For a server I'd do a minimal netinstall, then add whatever I need along the way.

DSL has a lot of crap not needed for servers. If you want to install only what you need, use Debian. It's been a great server distro for years.

There's another bug with Edgy concerning auto loading the drivers at startup. Add /usr/lib/parallels/autostart/drivers_start to the file /etc/rc.local in order to get the drivers automatically loaded at startup.

You should check Vista's licensing terms before running it on virtual machines. Read the following link: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=157 If you bought a Home version, you cannot run it on a VM running on top of itself. Btw, why the hell did they release the home basic version? :rolleyes:
