I'd recommend the Pro if you will be using Parallels heavily. The extra CPU power will come in handy. The Air would be fine for occasional use of Parallels.

Every time I open Parallels Desktop, it attempts to install drivers for a virtual USB printer, as well as an HP Laserjet printer, even though I have told Windows Update to stop looking for drivers. This started with a recent build of Parallels Desktop 7. Is there a way to stop this?

The MacBook Air boots into a 32-bit kernel in OS X 10.6. That will change once 10.7 comes out. Nevertheless, it runs 64-bit applications, and Boot Camp is capable of supporting 64-bit Windows without a problem.

Try configuring Parallels to use 1 CPU instead of 2 and see if that helps. That's what they told me to do, and so far, it seems to be working. Performance still seems decent. Hopefully this changes once the Sandy Bridge chips make their way to the MacBook Air and I have 4 virtual cores to use...

Parallels support suggested I reconfigure my VM to use 1 CPU core. So far, it's been 9 days since the last kernel panic. Hopefully this fixes it, but I've been here before (it went 6 weeks without a panic until late January when they started up again). We'll see.

I believe the 256MB comes out of the "full" 4GB of memory. The reason that 32-bit applications are limited to 3-3.5GB of RAM is that they need to allocate part of their 4GB address space to the VRAM. In this case, since the VRAM is only 256MB, its maximum impact on available RAM is only that much.

I definitely notice that the page outs (i.e. writes from RAM to the SSD) increase when I run Windows 7 within Parallels. That said, I don't really notice a slowdown of either Window 7 or OS X on basic tasks.
