mac intel to m1 chip

I'm strongly considering going from Fusion to Parallels. I have an iMac intel now but will upgrade to iMac with an M1 or M2 chip. Would it be better to install Parallels on my current machine and then create a Parallels VM? Is there some resource to walk me through migrating files and folders...
