Try this: open a new VM window (so it shows the Settings page). This window is about 600x400 in size. Move the window so that it's near the right edge of your screen. Hit the Play button to boot the VM. Result: the VM window gets resized to an odd size (like 500 wide by 768 tall) -- it looks like it is trying to avoid making the window go off the screen? Seems like a bug to me. Anyone else?

(Workaround -- DON'T DO THIS. -- When you open a VM, keep the window to the far left side of your screen before booting).

This works fine for me - no crash. The VM window has the left edge where the parallels window was. But the VM starts just fine on my macbook.

BTW: 3036 is rock solid for me - I am not using a boot camp partition though!
