3186- shared networking not working

Prior to installing 3186, Parallels/XP Professional worked great on my Macbook Pro. After installing 3186, the virtual machine will not run - I get the message "Unable to open Virtual Bridge. Is it installed and started?" Clicking OK dismisses the error message, but the VM will not run.

I recall that prior to the update to 3186, Shared Networking was selected, but since the update I am unable to select shared networking - it is gray and not able to select. Only bridged ethernet can be selected.

In Virtual Machine settings, network adapter otpions, enabled is checked, connect cable at startup is checked. Bridged ethernet is selected (shared networking unavailable to select), default adapter is selected. In advanced, Realtek 8029(AS) is selected, the only choice.

If I uncheck "enabled" in network adapter options, the VM will run but can't connect to the internet. Rechecking enabled results in the same "unable to open virtual bridge" error message.

Not sure why I can't select shared networking after the 3186 update.

update on 3186 networking problem

I worked around the 3186 network adapter problem, and all is well now. I used the unistaller to remove 3186, then reinstalled 3170. 3170 worked fine, no bridged networking problem and hassle-free internet connection. Then I reinstalled 3186. Before doing the 3186 install, this time I STOPPED the VM in 3170 (not suspended) before quitting Parallels 3170. Then I uninstalled 3170 and installed 3186. This time 3186 did not display the virtual bridge error message and the VM starts and runs fine ... so far.
 
3186 "unable to open virtual bridge" - Need a solution

I can confirm that installing 3186 leaves the "Shared Networking" (and "Host-only Networking") option disabled and unavailable for selection.

I do not have any previously downloaded copies to install as suggested in the last post, but I desperately need to use Shared Networking.

I see several others mentioning having a problem with this also.

Any clue when this bug will be fixed?

FWIW, uninstalling 3186 and reinstalling 1970 does not fix this problem. I have run into the same problem after "upgrading" to 3186. I did a full uninstall of 3186 using the Parallels uninstaller. I then reinstalled 1970, since that had been working fine. But now the 1970 install has the exact same problem -- Shared networking and Host-only networking are disabled. No amount of restarting my Mac fixes the problem.
 
So, here is how I finally did solve this problem:
1. I opened the OS X System Preferences window and selected Network. From the Show selector I chose Network Port Configurations. I selected then deleted en2 and en3, which had been added by Parallels.
2. I used the 3186 uninstaller to uninstall Parallels Desktop.
3. I restarted the Mac.
4. I downloaded Parallels Desktop build 3188.
5. I installed 3188. After the install, I immediately restarted the Mac.
6. I started up Parallels and discovered that I could once again select Shared Networking.
