What is happening to my XP vm here? Is there anyting I can do to repair this or am I simply going to have to reinstall the whole *(&^&* VM??

We will need quite a bit more information than that... We need to know what your OS version is, what your Windows OS version is, how big your HD is, what the available space is, RAM amount, RAM allocated, etc.

Thanks, here goes...

Hardware Info:
Machine Model: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B01
SMC Version: 1.12f5
Hard Drive: 120GB, 94Gb used

Software Info:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.9 (8P2137)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.9.1

Parallels: 3188, 16 Gb allocated (8 Gb initially, about 7gb used; I allocated another 8gb but haven't used much); 412Mb RAM allocated (expandable, I think).

Guest OS: XP Pro Service Pack 2

Any help much appreciated.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled Parallels Tools, to no effect. Does anyone have any further advice before I take the time-consuming step of rebuilding virtual machine.

Have you tried a boot into Safe Mode?

Also, you can try re-installing Parallels tools while in Safe Mode.

Yes, if just booting into Safe Mode and then rebooting doesn't resolve the issue then boot into Safe Mode and install Parallels Tools while in Safe Mode.
