Accessing Windows Update in guest crash Host Windows XP

I have been trying get Windows Update working inside my virtual machine.

Set the guest configuration using a 4GB virtual disk, 256MB of RAM.

Installation performs without any glitch (fast and smooth I must say), tried accessing windows update site, download the needed component (LegitCheckControl build 708) and restarted the iexplorer to get the updates.

During "detection" phase, the virtual computer hangs, and seconds later the host (lock mouse, keyb, task maanger, all) so I must hard-reset the whole computer.

Next time I try to start the VM, the windows inside it is just broken and must reinstall it again.

Inside Virtual PC 2007 works without problem, slow as hell, but works.

Tried 2.1.1670 and 2.2.2092, both with same results.

Also, same results installing parallels tools inside the VM or not.

The host hardware is Intel D101GGCL mobo, 1GB RAM Kingston, Intel Pentium D 805.
Windows XP Pro SP2 all updates applied as Host.

Guest: Windows XP Pro SP2, no updates.

Try to set Acceleration = Normal in VM config on VM flags tab. It will slow down your VM but you may be able to pass this update. After that you can change Acceleration back to high level. Please let me know will it work for you?

I forgot to mention that tried acceleration flag adjustments too. Normal and off.

In both cases, due the crash, I needed to start all the installation process all over again (I didn't perform a copy of the vm hdd, too stupid I must add).

Anyway, it crashed with Accel High, Normal or turned off.

What other kind of information could I provide? (cannot send a crash dumpe because the whole system freeze).

Try to temporarily remove all devices from VM configuration except from HDD and Network and try it again. If it helps you can add all devices again after update or backup and restore your PVS configuration file. Please let me know about results!

I made the modifications and Windows Update process worked without problems, with accell disabled or high.

The problem wasn't Parallels fault, but a buggy HD Realtek soundcard driver.

Intel download driver was 5.10.0.5242, working was 5.10.0.5202.

Now everything works!
