After Update to Mavericks Windows XP is frozen on startup

I have just updated to OSX Mavericks and am running Parallels 9. Parallels starts up fine and gets to the point of showing the desktop background image for Windows XP. However no icons or start menu bar show up, Windows just stays stuck at that point forever. When I try to shut down from the bottom left Parallels drop down menu an error message pops up in Windows: End Program - explorer.exe. Ending the program doesn't change anything.

Any advice?
